January: A Complex Month for GRLs

January is a weird vibe. On one hand, it’s this shiny new beginning—a fresh start full of hope and possibilities. We’ve got planners, mood boards, and resolutions galore. On the other hand, let’s be real: it’s also cold, dark, and exhausting. In places like Vermont, the days feel like they last five minutes, and the chilly air practically begs us to stay in bed. January is both the glow-up promise of a new year and the collective sigh of “can we just chill for a second?”

For GRLs, this contrast can feel overwhelming. The world screams “New Year, New Me!” while we’re over here just trying to figure out how to keep warm and survive the emotional hangover of the holidays. But here’s the thing: January doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. It’s OK to have goals and still let yourself rest. It’s OK to dream big and take baby steps.

Real Talk: The "New Year” Pressure Is Overrated

Let’s start with this: you don’t need to have it all figured out by January 1st. Seriously, who decided we’re supposed to overhaul our entire lives the second the ball drops? The pressure to make this month perfect can be a lot, so give yourself permission to opt out of the hustle. You’re not behind. You’re on your own timeline—and that’s exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Realistic Ways to Thrive This January

Here are some small, manageable ways to make January feel less like a pressure cooker and more like a cozy reset:

  1. Set Micro-Goals: Instead of promising to change everything all at once, focus on tiny, actionable steps. For example, drink one extra glass of water a day, or commit to a 10-minute walk. Small wins add up.

  2. Romanticize Rest: Light a candle, make some tea, and embrace the fact that rest is productive. Your body and mind need recovery time—especially after the chaos of the holidays.

  3. Create Winter Joy: Yes, it’s dark and cold, but winter doesn’t have to suck. Find the little joys: wear your favorite fuzzy socks, start a new book, or experiment with baking. Make the mundane magical.

  4. Journal About 2024: Reflect on the highs and lows of the past year. What made you happy? What do you want to leave behind? This exercise can help you feel grounded as you move forward.

  5. Connect With Your People: Whether it’s FaceTiming a friend or hanging out with family, prioritizing connection can boost your mood and remind you you’re not alone.

  6. Unplug When Needed: Social media can make January’s expectations feel 10x worse. Take breaks when you need to. Your mental health > everyone else’s highlight reel.

It’s OK to Take It Slow

Here’s your January permission slip: You’re allowed to rest. You’re allowed to take things day by day. You’re allowed to reject the hustle culture that tells you you’re only worth what you produce. There’s nothing wrong with moving at your own pace.

January is complicated, sure. But it’s also a blank canvas. You don’t have to paint it all at once—you can add to it little by little. So, give yourself grace, let go of perfection, and remember: the best goals are the ones that fit your life, not someone else’s expectations.
