Fueling Your Body

Let’s talk about something we all know but don’t always talk about enough: food. Specifically, food as fuel for our bodies. 🥑⚡

The other day, I came across something that stopped me in my tracks: “You don’t get to train if you don’t put fuel in.” And I LOVED that. It made so much sense to me, especially as someone who’s spent years pushing through workouts on low energy, feeling sluggish, or just downright miserable. Sometimes you’re dragging yourself through a workout because you didn’t put the right fuel in your body first.

And honestly, I get it. When I was growing up, no one really talked about fueling properly—especially for female athletes. I under-ate, I under-fueled, and as a result, I ended up feeling tired, weak, and honestly frustrated with my own body. It wasn’t until I started really listening to what my body needs that I began seeing a shift. You know how it goes—you can’t expect your car to run smoothly if you keep putting in the wrong type of gas. Same goes for your body. If you’re feeding it junk or not fueling it enough, your energy levels and performance will suffer. 🚗💨

Clean Fuel vs. Non-Clean Fuel: What’s the Difference?

Imagine this: Your body is like a high-performance car (or spaceship, if you’re into that). To keep it running smoothly, you need clean fuel—stuff that’s nutritious, full of vitamins, minerals, and sustainable energy. This includes whole foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. 🥦🍓🥑

Then, there’s the non-clean fuel—you know, the processed stuff that gives you a quick energy boost but leaves you crashing later. Think junk food, sugary snacks, or processed carbs. While they might taste good in the moment, they don’t provide lasting energy or the nourishment your body needs to perform at its best.

So, if you fuel with clean energy—aka balanced meals with nutrients—your body has the sustained energy to crush it during your workouts, study sessions, or just life in general. Non-clean fuel might give you a burst of energy, but it’s short-lived and often followed by that lethargic slump we all know too well.

Why Fueling for Training Is a Game-Changer

I really loved that quote I mentioned earlier because it flipped the script for me. It’s not just about training harder—it’s about fueling properly so your body can do what you need it to do. Because, let’s face it, if you’re not fueled properly, your workouts will feel miserable, like you’re going through the motions just to check the box.

This isn’t just about training, though. As a mom, athlete, and student, I’ve had to learn to prioritize fueling my body properly to keep up with everything I juggle. If I don’t give myself the proper nutrients, I feel like I’m dragging through my day, struggling to keep up with everything on my to-do list.

It’s Not About Being Perfect—It’s About Planning

Here’s the real talk: you don’t have to be perfect with your food choices. Nobody is! But you do need to start somewhere and plan ahead. Whether you’re into a specific diet or just looking for ways to eat healthier, the key is consistency and planning. Don’t get caught up in the hype of the “next big fix” on the internet—it’s all about setting yourself up for success.

Meal prepping, snacking on nutrient-dense foods, and making sure you’re getting enough calories (especially as an athlete or someone always on the go) will set you up for success. And don’t worry, you don’t have to stick to some unrealistic diet plan. Just eat real, whole foods, and make sure you’re getting what your body needs to function at its best.

Key Takeaways

  • Fuel = Energy: Your body needs the right fuel to perform well.

  • Clean vs Non-Clean Fuel: Whole foods = sustained energy. Junk food = quick highs, followed by crashes.

  • It’s About Balance, Not Perfection: You don’t need to be perfect, but you do need to plan ahead.

  • Set Yourself Up for Success: Meal prep, snack wisely, and make sure you’re getting the nutrients your body needs.

As an athlete, a mom, a student, or just someone who wants to feel good and do good things—fueling your body properly is everything. Start with small steps, and soon, you’ll feel the difference. 💪💥
