My Journey: Why I Created The GRL Initiative

Hey GRLs,

Let me take a minute to share the story behind The GRL Initiative and why I’m so passionate about creating a space for girls to rise, lead, and thrive. Growing up as a student-athlete, I faced my share of challenges—some that made me stronger, and others that made me question my place in the game. Through it all, I learned that success isn’t just about talent or luck—it’s about building the right skills and mindset to keep going, even when things get tough. That’s the heartbeat of The GRL Initiative.

Why I Started This Journey

I want every girl to have the tools to succeed—problem-solving skills, real-world confidence, and the resilience to bounce back when life knocks them down. As a leader, I’ve often asked myself, “How did I learn these skills?” And honestly? A lot of it came through trial and error.

Sports taught me how to get back up after I fell, but they also showed me how much work we still need to do to empower girls. Too often, we’re left to figure things out on our own, and that can feel lonely. I created The GRL Initiative to change that—to give girls the resources, support, and inspiration I wish I’d had growing up.

My Life in Sports

I’ve always been an athlete. When I was a kid, I played on the boys' t-ball team because, well, why not? I played softball until 8th grade when I made a big decision to stand up to a coach who treated me horribly. Walking away wasn’t easy, but it taught me that no one has the right to diminish your worth.

Basketball was my first love—the thing I thought I’d never give up. But by my sophomore year of high school, the fun was gone. I felt unseen, like my talent wasn’t being recognized. Eventually, I quit, and while that decision broke my heart, it also taught me that sometimes, stepping away is the bravest thing you can do but it doesn’t mean you don’t have regrets.

That’s when I found tennis. In tennis, I could shine. I fell in love with the mix of physical exercise and the camaraderie of a team. Later, I took on college tennis and even rugby, which challenged me to push my limits in new ways. Sports gave me so much: strength, resilience, and the understanding that failure is just a stepping stone to success.

The Challenges I Faced

Here’s the thing: My journey wasn’t all wins and trophies. As a student-athlete, I struggled with my body image. I’ve always had a bigger body, and growing up in a world of ultra-thin models made me feel like I didn’t belong. I didn’t have role models like Ilona Maher to look up to—just a constant sense that I didn’t fit the mold.

Kids, fans, and even uniforms reminded me of this every chance they got. I’ve been ridiculed, underestimated, and told I didn’t belong. But I’m here to tell you that none of that defines you. Your talent, your work ethic, your heart—that’s what matters.

I want all girls to feel confident when they step onto the field or court, no matter what their body looks like. I want you to know that you do belong, even if your uniform doesn’t fit perfectly (trust me, I’ve been there). And when the game gets hard or stops being fun, I want you to have the skills to keep going—to persist and chase your dreams, no matter what.

Why This Matters to Me

Looking back, I realize how much sports shaped me—not just as an athlete, but as a person. They taught me to stand up for myself, to push through tough times, and to trust my own journey. That’s what The GRL Initiative is all about: helping girls find their strength, build their confidence, and lead with purpose.

If you’re reading this, know that you’re capable of so much more than you realize. You don’t have to fit anyone else’s mold or live up to anyone else’s expectations. You just have to keep showing up, learning, and believing in yourself.

What’s Next?

Through The GRL Initiative, I’m building a space where female-identifying student-athletes can find the resources, support, and inspiration they need to thrive. Whether it’s blog posts, workshops, or just a safe space to share your story, I’m here for you.

Your journey matters. Your voice matters. And together, we can build a world where every girl rises and leads. 💕
